Aetna is one of the largest health care insurance in the US. Aetna, Inc. is a publicly traded holding company with more than 35 subsidiaries. Aetna was founded in 1853 and became a holding company in 1968. Aetna Life and Casualty Company merged with U.S. Healthcare in 1996 where they adapted the name Aetna, Inc. They provide the best resources to help members make informed decisions about their health insurance. Aetna products include medical, dental, pharmacy, group life, long-term care and disability plans, behavioral health and medical management capabilities. They are available in all 50 states with various products to fit small, middle market and large national employers. Primarily they cater to employer groups, individuals, part-time and hourly workers, college students and Medicare beneficiaries in certain markets. Aetna, Inc. has over 26,000 employees, they have a reported $39 million worth of assets for the year 2009 alone.

They have 3 business platforms: Health Care, Group Insurance, and Large Case Pensions. Health Care products include medical, pharmacy benefits management, dental and vision plan offerings. Aetna’s medical plans include point-of-service, preferred provider organizations, health maintenance organizations, health savings accounts and indemnity plans. They also offer specialty products such as medical management and data analysis services stop loss insurance, behavioral health plans, as well as products that provide access to its provider networks in select markets.

Group Insurance segment offers life, disability, and long term care insurance products, they have 15.1 million members divided into risk plans and non-risk plans.  Large Case Pension manages various retirement products, including pension, annuity products for tax qualified pension and pension plans. Although this product is no longer marketed they continue to manage the run-off of existing business.

Aetna, Inc. also has a wide network of health care service providers, including primary care, specialist physicians and hospitals ready to assist its members. Sales personnel, independent brokers and agents also cover a great area to assist in servicing businesses.
